In regard to the Dick Morris article, "The Death of Israel" published in his blog and presented here on May 24th 2009; Joel Friedlander, an attorney in Long Island, New York presented the following rebuttal: My response follows his rebuttal.

This diatribe relates to THE DEATH OF ISRAEL

What aggravates me most about people like Mr. Morris and Ms. McGann is that there is no excuse for their lamentable ignorance. But of course they aren’t ignorant, they are just venal and politically self serving. There is nothing to suggest that the World is going to allow Iran to develop nuclear weapons, especially since North Korea is doing such a nice job of mucking things up in the far East. Still, Morris and McGann are fear mongers and will do anything to support the interpretation of history which is favored by the Neocons who got us into Iraq under President George W. Bush.
Morris and McGann state, "If Iran gets the bomb, it will use it to kill six million Jews. No threat of retaliation will make the slightest difference. One cannot deter a suicide bomber with the threat of death. Nor can one deter a theocracy bent on meriting admission to heaven and its virgins by one glorious act of violence. Iran would probably not launch the bomb itself, anyway, but would give it to its puppet terrorists to send to Israel so it could deny responsibility. Obama, bent on appeasement, would likely not retaliate with nuclear weapons. And Israel will be dead and gone."
The Iranians, assuming arguendo that they can develop them, will not use nuclear weapons against Israel for several reasons, none of which relates to a love of the Jews.
Firstly:

Iran is not going to destroy the third holiest place in Islam just to chase the Jews away. Every year multiple thousands of Muslims visit the mosque to pray; the Iranians will not kill them all to wipe out the Jews, if in doing so they destroy their own religion.
Secondly, Jerusalem is 45 miles from Amman Jordan, 135 miles to Damascus, 145 miles to Beirut, 264 miles to Cairo, and less then 75 miles from every part of the West Bank http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/distances.html?n=110.
Given the fact of the wind, any use of a nuclear weapon set off in Israel would spread radiation all over the adjoining Arab countries. Millions of Arab Muslims would be killed by the actions of the Persians, who are not Arabs, and are not of the same religious tradition as the Arabs. Now, Iran is not popular with its neighbors because it is Shiite and they are Sunni, and they really do harbor a poisonous hatred about that, but in addition, it is also unpopular because it is trying to establish hegemony in the region and none of the Arab states are interested in the Persians regaining control of the region. It is therefore probably that the Arab states, would, albeit with no love of Israel, or the Jews, unite to prevent Iran from getting or using nuclear weapons in the Middle East.
Thirdly, I don’t care what Barak Obama is interested in doing with regard to the Iranians, the Congress of the United States is almost universally united behind Israel and wouldn’t allow his administration to let Israel be wiped out. The fundamentalist Christians, who have made common cause with Israel for decades would simply not allow such a course of action. If there is no Israel there will be no place for Jesus to return to and hence no Second Coming, and that simply is not to be allowed for a fundamentalist Christian. Moreover, the Christians, and there are quite as many of them as there are Muslims, are as religiously attached to Israel as the Muslims are, say to Mecca or Medina. That brings us to
Fourth, the Israelis have nuclear weapons of their own, and no matter how short the warning of an Iranian attack was, before the bombs hit Israel, the Israelis would destroy every adjoining Muslim country along with its shrines and holy places; ie., goodbye to Mecca, Medina, and every other Muslim holy place. I don’t think that the Iranians are going to do that to their own religion.
Finally, the Israelis aren’t going to allow the Iranians to develop a nuclear weapon any more then they recently let Syria develop one or allowed Iraq to develop one. The Israeli Air Force is possibly the finest in the World and would take whatever losses necessary to wipe out the Iranian threat. Where would they get the information about the location of the weapon sites? Well, the Mossad are not slackers like out CIA apparently is.

Obama doesn't seem to have the stones for a military attack, short of the U.S. who else is there other than Israel to stop these Mullahs. Sanctions? My study of history has never shown me one instance where an aggressive nation has ever been deterred from curtailing its ambitions by economic sanctions; please see North Korea...In regard to Dick morris, there can be no doubt he's a self serving guy and a political sore loser but that doesn't necessarily detract from the weight of his arguments. I agree with your assessment that a nuclear exchange between any parties in the Middle East would be catastrophic to the entire region but that does not preclude an Iranian sponsored attack with a tactical weapon in some part of Israel; Tel Aviv, heaven forbid, could suffer untold death and destruction. Likewise, I think your arguments place to much emphasis on the rationality of the present Iranian regime or their love for Sunni Arabs which comprise the major sect of Islam. Few can doubt the hatred and fear that the Saudis, Egyptians, and Jordanians have for Iran but under present circumstances, fear trumps hatred particularly in the face of a pussilanimous Administration in Washington. In the event of a nuclear attack by either Iran or a proxy, there's no doubt Israeli retaliation would be swift and lethal but what circumspect government of Israel would allow for throwing the second punch in such an exchange?
From any perspective, few serious students of history and international relations can deny the gathering storm which is enveloping the world today; North Korea; the Taliban in Afghanistan and on the outskirts of Islamabad; Islamic terrorism around the world; and as we're discussing, a bellicose and soon to be nuclear Iran. With all this in mind, I find it incomprehensible that the main agenda on Obama's plate is Palestinian statehood and the "wrongfulness" of enhanced interrogation. As if the Islamic world would abrogate the tenets of the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the Hadith and accept the right of other religions to co-exist with Islam on equal terms if only a Palestinian State was created. Obama, his democratic congress, and the majority of Jews that helped bring him into office are living in a dream world if they think this is so. In our lifetime, there has never, bar none, been a more pro-Muslim president. I can only hope you are correct about the congress backing Israel if push comes to shove; there actually were some signs of this when they voted down funds for the closure of Gitmo but Israel needs their unequivocal diplomatic support now, not after she's backed into a corner.
As a further note on this Palestinian State scrap; what is this brilliant, highly educated, intellectual, pseudo moralistic moron talking about? Since the real power broker on the Palestinian side is Hamas; with their uncompromising Charter of 1988 calling for the total destruction of Israel; why is Obama so emphatic about peace talks, based on the Saudi Initiative with the vanquished Abbas and the PLO. That makes about as much sense as the allies talking peace with a friendly German government in exile around 1939. It's a non-starter. Couple this with a belligerant Syria; Hezbollah in Lebanon; the issue of the right of return for millions of Palestinians; and the irreconcilable issue of Jerusalem; it seems to me it would be suicidal for the Jewish State to even consider acquiescing to a Palestinian State at this juncture.
